Hairstyling

Our Hairstyling Specialization Certificate Course is a 12-week professional training program designed to equip students with deep, culturally centered expertise in Afro-textured hairstyling. This specialization bundles together multiple focused courses into one certification, empowering learners with both foundational care and advanced styling techniques.

Students will explore two distinct pathways: Styling with Heat, including shampoo and treatment protocols, blow drying, and silk press techniques; and Zero-Heat Styling, covering curl definition, twist-outs, roller sets, Bantu knots, and more. You’ll also master Afro-textured updos for everyday and special occasions.

The course begins with our required free course — Science of Black Hair (Course 101) — providing a vital grounding in the structure, biology, and care of natural hair. From there, learners complete a blend of online theory, assessments, and hands-on practicum.

Flexible Learning Options:

  • Online Only: Complete all coursework virtually
  • Hybrid: Theory online + hands-on practice in person
  • In-Person Practicum: Mondays & Tuesdays — choose 9–12Am, 1–4Pm, or 5–8Pm
  • Weekend Slots: Reserved for students practicing with live models

Students receive a certificate upon successful completion and emerge business-ready to work as stylists, salon professionals, or entrepreneurs specializing in Afro hair care and styling.

This course centers the brilliance, diversity, and professional possibilities of Afro-textured hair — preparing you to enter the beauty industry with skill, purpose, and cultural confidence.

COS 103 : AFRO BLOW-OUT & SILK PRESS

The course is centered around hairstyling techniques with a focus on blow-drying and silk pressing, specifically for Afro-textured short hair. Key points include: 1. **Tools and Equipment**: - Importance of using a blow dryer with a concentrator and a pick attachment. - The use of a round brush and a Denman or paddle brush for different hair textures. 2. **Blow Drying**: - Initiates with medium heat for short hair to allow for proper detangling before the hair dries. - Method involves using fingers to stretch and detangle hair while drying. - For preparing hair for a silk press, it's important to ensure it is well-stretched and not too dry or tangled. 3. **Moisturizing**: - After hair is about 80% dry, a cream moisturizer is applied to better absorb while some moisture remains. - Emphasis on working the moisturizer into the hair shaft. 4. **Preparation for Silk Press**: - Use of a heat protectant before applying heat. - Sectioning hair according to its density for a uniform result. 5. **Silk Press Technique**: - Utilizes medium heat on a flat iron. - Conducts a few passes to achieve a silky straight look, evaluating the result to ensure effectiveness. - Trim hair conservatively by lifting and cutting, considering natural curl patterns. 6. **Conclusion**: - Application of oil or serum after completing the silk press to seal in moisture without weighing down fine hair. - Final result aims for shiny, healthy, well-moisturized hair. The course emphasizes the importance of preparation, the use of appropriate tools, and mindful application of products to achieve a professional finish, ensuring hair health and appearance are optimized in the process.
